Embedding Google into WordPress

The other day, I was working with teachers on their WordPress websites and the topic of embedding Google Apps content on your website came up.

There are two ways that you can do this effectively.  One way that involves using a plugin and one way that involves publishing the Google Doc (Sheets, Slides, etc) and copying the files embed code.

The Simple Way … Embedding Directly From Google Docs

One of the quickest ways you can share your Google content on your WordPress website is by first publishing your content by going to File – Publish to Web – Embed

Embedding Google Through A Plugin

Another way that you can easily embed content into your WordPress website is through one of many Google related plugins.  Two of these are perfect for easily embedding content into your blog.

Google Drive Embedder

“Google Drive Embedder gives authors easy access to their Google Drive in a popup box, where they can select documents to embed directly into their post or page. Just as easily as picking a photo from the WordPress media gallery.”

Between the two of these plugins, the first one is a free plugin where the second plugin will run about $20 per blog.  Does this mean that one plugin is better than the other?  That is something you will have to test on your own website to see how they each perform.

The Final Conclusion

Where someone might look at this post and see that there is an obvious winner when it comes to free vs paid.  It also has some merit to look at the differences between doing a simple publish from inside of the Google Doc directly into WordPress.

If you have several Google Docs that run your website, it might be helpful to use a plugin that literally plugs directly into your Google Drive.  This could save you considerable amount of time when you are developing your websites and blog posts.
