3 Ways that OKIOCAM Can Help Teachers And Students Create Dynamic Digital Learning Spaces This Year!

This year, as more classrooms are open for students, teachers are reflecting on their experiences from a full year of completely digital learning and asking themselves how they can blend what they have learned in the digital world with the new opportunities that they have available to them in their physical worlds.

However, are document cameras only designed for teacher use?  In this blog, we are going to discuss a fantastic Document Camera and share how both you AND your students can use it for dynamic digital learning activities.

What is an OKIOCAM?

OKIOCAM is a USB Plug and Play Document Camera by OKIOLABS that features a high definition 1080P camera, adjustable and extendable mounting arm, foldable base and fits easily in any backpack or laptop case.

The OKIOCAM comes in three different models:

    • Designed for students. This model is equipped with a 3-mega pixel camera. OKIOCAM S comes with a smaller base. The maximum shooting area is around 8.5×11 inches (letter size). The buttons on OKIOCAM S control the exposure and focus.
    • Designed for Teachers. This model is equipped with a 5-mega pixel camera. OKIOCAM T comes with a larger base. The maximum shooting area is around 11×17 inches (ledger size). The buttons on OKIOCAM T control the exposure, zoom, and focus.
    • Designed for simulating in-class teaching. Tech specification of this model is exactly the same as OKIOCAM T. However, OKIOCAM T Plus comes with an Anti-glare coating foldable whiteboard, a dry-erase marker, and a microfiber wiper to clean the whiteboard.

I recently was able to check out the OKIOCAM lineup in my digital classroom and they are awesome devices but, you don’t have to take my word for it.

Are Document Cameras Only For Teachers?

One of the discussion questions that came up recently on a podcast was about working with students both in and out of the classroom who have document cameras at their desks.  It hit me at first, but after thinking about it a bit, I realized … why not provide students the opportunity to use their own cameras in class.  Video activities shouldn’t be limited to simply the teacher … right?

What are the advantages of providing document cameras to students?

In one of my elementary schools, they have a daily activity called “centers” where they have the opportunity to solve a problem or work on a given topic with a group of students.  As a coach, I’m constantly searching for ways to provide valuable digital learning opportunities to centers.

3 Ways to use OKIOCAM in the Classroom

As a Dynamic Web Cam

For many students, their webcam’s come pre-attached or built into their desktop computers and laptops.  This generally forces the teacher to remain standing or sitting in front of their devices all day without the ability to easily walk around the room for discussion and demonstration.

Using OKIOCAM’s high definition 1080P camera and easily revolving base station with autofocus buttons, it’s simple to turn your document camera into a dynamic webcam so that students can interact not only with each other but with their worlds.

I can remember a few years back needing to bring in additional camera equipment simply to help teachers take their students on virtual field trips.  Due to the wide field of view on the OKIOCAM, you can tilt the camera to face your students quickly and easily so that they can interact with other classrooms, museums, and so much more.

One of my favorite features of the webcam is the ability to flip your screen.  This is a feature that sadly is currently not available when using Google Meet natively and by using the OKIOCAM, teachers can quickly flip their camera view by pressing one button on OKIOCAM when using Google Meet or needed to support any type of classroom activity.

To Live Stream Classroom Presentations

Are you looking to take your student-created morning announcements to the masses this year but don’t know where to start?  The OKIOCAM’s high-definition camera is perfect for producing daily or weekly live morning announcements to your school and surrounding community.

Simply point your camera and turn on a streaming solution such as StreamYard to broadcast your school programs to the world!

As a Stop Motion Animation Camera

OKIOCAM cameras are your one-stop solution for students interacting with both their physical and digital classrooms.  By using the OKIOCAM Snapshot and Recorder, your students can create authentic lessons that are publishable and shareable.

An additional option to the camera, the OKIOCAM Education Kit includes OKIOCAM Stop Motion to turn your classroom into a fully-featured Stop Motion video studio.

OKIOLABS Stop Motion

Simply create a space in your classroom to set up physical objects such as dinosaurs or POP! figures and in no time your students are creating animated movies that could rival Hollywood!
