Are you sitting here looking to Build Your EDU Brand and not quite sure how to get started?
Do you have pretty awesome ideas for your website, social media, and podcast all planned out, but aren't sure how to bind them all together?
Today, we are going to help you take all of those thoughts and glue them together to build a solid website foundation that will teach you how to create a website that acts as a Digital Hub for not just your blogs and podcast, but in fact for all of your web content.
In our first three blog posts, we learned how to Create an Avatar and come up with a focused content strategy based on the needs of your Avatar and use those concepts to come up with a Brand that people will think of and remember.
Today we are going to talk about your website, or as I like to call it, your “Digital Hub”. At the bottom of this email, I will also be sharing a special link to download my Website Design Brainstorming Template.
What is a Digital Hub?
For many, a website is the first thing that they think of putting together when they are starting a project. They can't wait to start up a new Google Site, or WordPress website and move the puzzle pieces around. The problem with this strategy is that it actually takes LONGER to make a website when you first start with the actual website.
However, when thinking of your online home as a “Digital Hub” you start to think of everything that needs to be a part of the website BEFORE you start to build. Things that you should be thinking of include:
- Social Media
Often when we start by building a website first we forget that it is the tree in the middle of the forest. I often start by helping my clients create a very vivid idea of what the forest can look like before we even start discussing the individual shrubbery. This usually is where we start to discuss things such as Websites, Blogs, and the various types of content that will be hosted inside them.
Websites Vs Blogs
In the world of web development, there are generally 2 different types of online structures and it's important to learn about these before you make your decision on a web platform.
Traditionally, websites are static. If you think of your average “I'm a Consultant” type of website, you will generally see the same type of content no matter what time of the year you visit. There are several great website platforms that make beautiful websites full of static content, Google Sites probably being the most popular for educators.
Blogs, on the other hand, are helpful to have when you want to consistently create new content. Two great examples of platforms who are based on this concept are WordPress and Blogger.
Static Content vs Dynamic Content
Generally, when creating websites, there are two types of content that need to be thought of and prepared.
Static Content is content on your website that generally doesn't get updated. This could be your ABOUT ME page or your CONTACT page. Static content should often be thought of as anchor pages that help ground your web visitors and give them points of interest to learn more about you and your brand.
In contrast, Dynamic Content is content that gets updated over time. This would be your blog content or podcast episodes. It is dynamic because your user has the opportunity to see different content each time they visit your site.
