How to Access your Schoology Resources for Simple Lesson Planning
Last week, we shared a post on 5 things you can do with Schoology to get ready for next year. One of the things we mentioned was saving your course content and materials to your personal resources.
In this post, we will breakdown Schoology resources and take a closer look at how to exactly utilize this feature and get the most out of it.
Schoology resources are your personal filing cabinets for course content and materials. By taking advantage of this feature, you are in essence, creating a backed up repository of everything you have from your courses or groups. It’s best practice to get in the habit of saving and organizing things from year-to-year in your resources.
To access your personal Schoology resources
- Click the “resources” tab at the top of the Schoology window.
- Select the filing cabinet you want to access.
- Select “personal” to access your private cabinet of content.
- Select “public” to access open-sources content shared by others using Schoology.
- Select “groups” → then select the specific group you are a part of to access content shared within the group.
- Select “apps” to access applications you can connect to your Schoology account/profile.
To save individual course materials to your Schoology Resources
- Select the course from the dropdown menu at the top of the Schoology window.
- Click the “gear” icon next to the folder or course material you want to save.
- Click “save to resources”.
- In the window that opens, you can designate a “collection” or leave it as home.
- “Home” is your personal resources bin.
- Next, select the folder you want to save this material to. (If none, leave it as “no folder”).
- Click “save copy”.
To save entire courses to your Schoology Resources
- Select the course from the dropdown menu at the top of the Schoology window.
- Click the “options” button.
- Click “save course to resources”.
- In the window that opens, you can designate a “collection” or leave it as home.
- “Home” is your personal resources bin.
- Next, select the folder you want to save this material to. (If none, leave it as “no folder”).
- Click “submit”.
Saving entire courses to your Schoology resources keeps everything nice an organized. A course that has been saved to resources will automatically create a folder in your resources titled the course name and copy everything within, in order of how it is shown, within this folder.
What You Can Do With Resources
When in your personal Schoology resources, it will default to your “home” list, which consists of any individual course materials or entire courses you have saved to your resources. From here, there are a variety of things you can do. I recommend keeping up with your resources and organizing, modifying, and/or deleting what is needed. This can quickly fill up and get out of control if you leave it alone too long. Just like Google Drive, make sure everything has a folder. This is easier to manage and makes it easier to copy specific you things need to your courses next year.
Within resources, you can also create new assignments or create collections of materials to share with others in or outside your district. In my district, new Schoology courses are populated over the summer. Because of this, teachers do not have access to their Schoology courses to do work or modify existing content. By utilizing your personal resources effectively, you can create materials right from within, and then copy these out to your courses once they are populated, making it that much easier to get started next school year.
